Potting Compounds or Conformal Coatings?
A conformal coating is a thin polymeric film applied to a printed circuit board (PCB) to protect the board and its components and prevent corrosion. A potting compound is a thick resin layer which seals the board against its environment.
When identifying how best to protect your PCB you should consider several factors; Likelihood of extreme temperatures, waterproofing requirements, stress or shock faced by the PCB and possibility of chemical exposure. Generally Potting Compounds offer more protective benefits in harsh environments, whilst Conformal Coatings are more flexible and beneficial for everyday consumer products.
